story for us. mike, good morning. >> good morning, carl. how are you. yes, there's been a lot of controversy, and it's been building leading township this day. just think of what's happened in the past couple of weeks leading up to this commemoration of 9/11. in fact, no sooner will the last of the names be read and the last of the moments of silence be acknowledged at this point that two separate protests will form, yes, near ground zero, but, more importantly, in the site of that proposed islamic cultural center and mosque. one protesting the mosque itself. the other group in protest against racism and anti-muslim sentiment. there's so much of that in recent weeks. think of some of the examples. some say this is a christian company and they should build their mosques in foreign countries, and a radio dj in houston saying that if they build a mosque, i hope somebody blows it up. all of that leading to today. even president obama has been drawn into this talking about the now abandoned plan to burn those korans by florida pastor terry jones. >> although this may be one individual

tropical storm hermine is really making her presence felt in the state next to us here in texas. twisters touched down in and around the city of dallas. that's where the weather channel's julie martin is joining us from this morning. julie, good morning to you. what's the latest? >> well, good morning, matt. hermine made for a very wild weather day here in texas, from flash flooding to tornadoes. it really left its mark, and unfortunately, it is not finished just yet. i want to take you now to some images from the evening rush hour last night here in dallas, as twisters just started dropping out of the sky, as many as six funnels reported throughout the area. one of them slicing right through the heart of the city, hitting many buildings, bringing up water mains, and also knocking out power to thousands of people. one of the most impressive images, an 18-wheeler literally picked up, flipped 180 degrees with the driver inside, and slammed into the very building i am standing in front of. that driver, by the way, is doing all right this morning. but before all of that widespread f

suppose it's a great sign if you old a lot of gold. but you're absolutely right, for the rest of us out there, not a very good sign. one of the reasons is all the doomsayers out there are effectively trying to help bid this price up. there's a lot of fear. gold really shows the fear factor that's going on right now in this economy. also, the relationship between gold and the u.s. dollar is very important here. the u.s. dollar has really been getting hit hard. correspondingly, then, you start to see gold increase in its price. and now we've blown through $1,300 an ounce, a new high. >> all right. trish regan, thanks so much. >>> and finally now, let's take a look at this. a woman in montana says she scared off a bear trying to get into her home by throwing a six-pound zucchini at the bear, hitting it on the head. the bear ran off. officials say the unidentified woman was pretty shaken up. she's okay. she now really values very large vegetables. it is now 7:04. what next? can you believe it? >> she needs to be on a commercial for miracle grow. this saved my life. >> it worked. >> wow.

on the scene. miguel, what can you tell us? >> reporter: matt, good morning. at least 75 people were rushed to the hospital overnight, some of them injured critically. we know at least one person is dead, although that number may rise. some 53 homes were completely destroyed. more than 100 others damaged. it's believed the explosion may have been caused by a ruptured gas line. and as one witness said here, they described the scene as "hell on earth." the explosion ripped through san bruno just before 7:00 local time, the dinner hour in this suburb just south of san francisco. a blast so violent, some thought it was an earthquake, or worse, a jetliner crash. it was neither. >> i went out and seen this big fireball. first thing i thought was, oh, god, something went up, and it was intense with flames. >> reporter: a monster, gas-fed fireball with flames shooting as high as 100 feet into the air was burning so hot, it obscured everything around it. asphalt melted, windows shattered, the sky turned black and the sound, what witnesses describe as a roaring and a groaning, could be he

chief environmental affairs correspondent anne thompson is live in the gulf, she joins us by phone on board the q4000, the vessel where the blowout prevenner is being kepds, anne, good morning. >> good morning. as i talk to you i am looking at the massive failed blowout preventer. it sits on the floor of the helix q4000 vessel this morning. it took almost three hours last night from when we first saw the first signs of yellow metal break through the water surface, to get it on this vessel. the blowout preventer came up through what's called the moon pool and basically that's a giant hole that's created in this vessel when they open the drill floor and push it back and then they raise this 1 million pound structure. fbi evidence response teams filmed the rising and then immediately went to work on gathering evidence. there's also a team of bp lawyers here which watched the blowout preventer come up. the 1 million pound structure sits on a stump this morning. it is secured by four mammoth screws. it was hoisted up a mile from the top of the well, a journey that took some 32 hours in

, it would have been a mess for us. right now, we've got wind gusts of over 70 miles per hour and it's a sand-driven, wind-driven rain that is just really brutal. we have had reports of flooding. we still have power throughout good portions of the outer banks right now. a lot of people are really, really excited about the fact that this could have been much worse. it's downgraded in its size and power. right now, we do have hurricane warnings in effect still for the northern half of the coastline of north carolina. we also have tropical storm watches and warnings all the way up to new england. hurricane warnings for parts of new england as well. the big problem is going to be the storm surge. not so much the rain. it's going to be the storm surge, anywhere from two to four feet of storm surge, some areas picking up five feet of storm surge, but make no mistake, rainfall is still going to be an issue. we're talking about rain that could be anywhere from two to four to six inches, some areas picking up seven to ten inches of rain, especially as you get up to new england. this system will

is bearing down on the island. the weather channel's jim cantore is there for us. jim, good morning. >> lester, good morning. yeah, the national weather service here, the bermuda weather service, says it's called to prepare for a direct hit. the center expected to come within 10 miles of bermuda. and with 100 mile wide hurricani force winds, a direct hit is unavailable in through here. you can already see the wave action behind me crashing into the rock cliffs through here. but they're preparing residents. that's the key, to take a major hit. something they haven't seen since fabian here. they're saying we're going to have roof damage, it's going to be widespread. we're going to have tree and power line damage. the royal navy is on standby. the big question is when are they going to be able to get in here? is it going to be monday afternoon? because it looks like conditions are going to be bad for 20, 30, 40 hours where no one will be able to leave their homes and no one will be out on the road. cruise ships plan to park here? no way. they're not even coming in. this certainly looks
